First-Generation Kia Sportage Engines (1993–Early 2000s)

The original Sportage was very different from today’s crossover. Introduced in 1993, it was a relatively compact, body-on-frame SUV with four-wheel-drive capability.

Kia’s heritage records list inline-four gasoline and diesel engines between roughly 2.0 and 2.2 liters for the first generation.

2.4L Gasoline Engine

In North America, the third-generation Sportage took a different direction.

The 2011 U.S. Sportage launched with a 2.4-liter DOHC four-cylinder producing 176 hp, replacing the previous generation’s 2.7-liter V6. Kia also added a higher-performance 2.0-liter turbo GDI engine to the lineup.

The Sportage SX’s Theta II 2.0 turbo produced up to 260 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque in Kia’s U.S. specifications.
